There are at least 4 playable characters, the length of the game is good (12 stages), and once you figure out the special/super weapon systems it's not only high-scoring but fair in terms of difficulty for beginners. The story mode adds nice variety although the subtitles and dialogue are borderline cheesy at times and the English is understandably broken. It doesn't distract form the solid gameplay though and each character/ship has different attributes. If you buy the "Threat of third force" DLC you get an additional play mode (I haven't tried it yet)..I only have one real complaint-during gameplay, at least with a controller, there seems to be no way to auto-hide the mouse cursor so it's always showing the "loading" circle during the action-does not directly affect the gameplay but is a real nuisance and it would be nice to see it fixed-given the game is over 3 years old I don't think it will though.Another lesser-known entry in the genre that is more than worth the price, but if you happen to see it on sale buy it without hesitation. If you get the bundle with the soundtrack (decent) you'll save a couple bucks too.. Solid title with good effort put into adding story, It is still confusing, largely in part due to the poor translation.. Lots of bullets will greet you from the onset of this bullet hell shmup. Luckily, it has focus fire to allow for slow and precise movement. This is a well made game that bullet hell fans will enjoy.. An extremely fast paced shmup that seems to blend bullet hell gameplay along with some caravan aspects. Namely extremely destructive weaponry, along with TONS of enemies on screen. The game's incredibly fun to play, but it still feels somewhat unfinished in its current state due to lacking online leaderboards, replay support, and a practice mode along with some other features that are usually in games like this. I'd still recommend the game, but you'd be better off waiting for a sale if you're unsure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYP5WxbzXq4. I played for over an hour straight and I have no idea what I was doing. I was pretending to dodge bullets and I apparently did, for a time at least, and achievements kept popping on the bottom right side of my screen. The game does a really poor job at explaining anything to you, even in he pseudo tutorial which consists of a couple confusing screens full of bright colours. The thing is, that matches perfectly what you'll be up against: bright colours. I really wonder if there have been reported cases of epilepsia while playing this game because it's frankly too much. There's a "souls" trend in gaming, so to speak, which favours games that hate you and Varstray is one of them. You're not armed with a toothpick for a change, but the sheer amount of bullets is just disheartening, and that comes from a shmup and bullet hell lover. WTF man. After a quick glance at the options, where I found the "new!" above-mentioned tutorial I started the game in arcade mode and I managed to do a full two-loop run, which means 24 levels of pure aborrent hell and dozens of continues. It took me over half an hour to find out about the different kinds of weapons, the shield and the super boost thingie that erases bullets and upon which the game seems to be built. Even if the early stages are a bit more doable than the rest, the controls did not feel intuitive enough and there's no respite from the unrelenting waves of impossible-to-dodge bullets to take ownership of the game without certain death. One could argue I could have tried more, different modes etc... but that's my way of feeling a game: how does it play and feel out of the blue, without tinkering. Last but not least, for some reason there was no sound at all during my run.All this led me to ask for a refund and this review. "I played for over an hour straight and I have no idea what I was doing." pretty well sums up my feelings.. Story makes no sense, world-building makes no sense. But you get to shoot many enemies, and there's bullets everywhere on screen. ^_^. I haven't played a whole lot of the "Caravan" sub-genre of shmups, but I'd venture this is probably one of the most manic among them. The basic game is pretty pure shmup fun, with good sound and eye-pleasing explosions of color and shiny medals. Optimal scoring probably requires memorizing the six hidden bonus item locations strewn across each of the 12 normal + ?? "Ura" levels, which (as far as I'm yet aware) cannot be revealed while using the "Grabuster/Gravastar" gimmick attack (which is a crucial element of scoring), meaning you might also need to plan taking bullets to pre-empt its activation during its pre-activation Baryon Laser phase (thusly cancelling warm-up by shunting Baryon Laser gauge into a shield hit) so as not to miss these bonuses. In short, if you want to obsessively optimize scoring and routing, there's probably a lot here for you. I probably won't dig that deep into this game, given that I can just barely clear it on 'Standard', but it's pretty neat. I'll probably be firing it up for runs long into the future.(I might be wrong on the Grabuster bit, since even taking a shield hit denies you a bonus at the end of the level, but maybe the hidden items would compensate. I need to try extended hovering over hidden bonuses with it active.). Terrible translation with grammatical mistakes everywhere. There's a story and even voice acting, but I didn't care enough to read what was going on.- Non-stop chaotic, intense bullet patterns, not fun to play. The only saving grace is that you have a shield, so you don't die in one hit.- Bland uninspired levels. Actually, I think it even reused the same level template multiple times.- Bland uninspired bosses + enemies. Same enemies, same boss (but slightly different looking) every single time.+ There seems to be a lot to unlock, at least.I got this for 50 cents and I still feel cheated. Get something else instead unless you're starved for a SHMUP.. Just bought the game recently and fell in love with it. If you are a hardcore fan of SHMUP, this is the game for you.First, the art style, CHARMING in anyway you think, UNIQUE, each character has their own story-lines, dialogues. BOY, i can say that this is the first SHMUP game with a veryyyyyy long prologue for each character from their own perspective. Even i ask myself that am i playing a shmup game or playing a VN game :)). You play the game, it's intense, after that you can sit back and enjoy the story, not to mention those funny dialogues which make me laugh non-stop :))). AWESOME.The gameplay is very challenging, many gamemodes for you to play with. Yeah, the hit box is the little dot at the center of your aircraft, though you think it's gonna be easy to dodge.... i mean "FLY" through thousand waves of bullets but NO, it's harder than you think. 1 mistake can be so deadly. Luckyly, we have the baryon shield that can protect you from 1 bullet, take another shot and your are dead. After charging the baryon shield gauge to full, it will change to baryon lazer mode which acts as the bomb system of the game, unleash the barrage of lazers that can erase bullets from the enemies, and you can collect the stars which will fill the second gauge next to the baryon gaude. When the you are out of baryon energy with the stars you collected before, it will give you the temporary shield that can protect you for harm and use that to smash the enemies. 5 subweapons for you to choose, now that many :)).Play for fun or challenge with your friends who will get to top of the leaderboard, even sit back and enjoy the epic SF story of the game, it's the game for you, play it and love it, the hidden gem in the SHMUP genre.I wish for the sequel of this game, and an update patch with keyboard configuration would be nice. One more think, i don't know if you realized or not but i can say like this : The game is an upgraded version of the NES game called "Star Force" of Tehkan & Hudson Soft in the past. See it to believe it. It's Worth. CHEER :3. The Hurricane of the Varstray -Collateral Hazard- is a vertical shooter bullet hell game that I would highly recommend for fans of the genre. It has a few elements that immediately made it stand out to me. The biggest one is probably the "bullet wobble" or a parallax-type effect on all the bullets on screen where they move slightly in the opposite direction as your ship's movement. This effect seems to be turned up to 11, and on top of this there are a ridiculous amount of bullets and enemies on the screen at any given time even on novice mode. That being said the game looks a lot harder than it is, which I think is a good thing ultimately. I've seen some of the other reviews criticize the game for having hit detection that is too forgiving, complaining that they found it difficult to die or that their ship would get hit by bullets and they wouldn't die. Indeed, especially on easy, the game allows the player to fly through very dense bullet patterns at high speed and many times come out unscathed. To say your hitbox is small and the bullet edges are "soft" is an understatement. The auto-shield regenerates very quickly as you kill enemies in easy mode and is very forgiving overall after triggering. Although, after a solid amount of time playing I can assure you that it is possible to die and the game definitely has a consistent hit detection that once learned is very fun to play. It may be slightly different in that it is a lot more forgiving than many bullet hell games in this area but with the amount of bullets and enemies it makes sense. In the few moments where the game is too hard (level 2 in the DLC's meteorites come to mind, or when continuing and missing the full powerup leaving you with the base weapon only in a later level) it is apparent that the actual game balance is appropriate for creating an enjoyable challenge; the game isn't very fun when it's too hard to play, which is a real balancing act when there are going to be thousands of bullets on the screen at once. I've also seen the criticism that the player ship moves too fast or is impossible to dodge accurately because it is too sensitive. These people either played it in an earlier version or didn't assign a slow button. The game has a slow button that can be pressed while shooting the main weapon to slow you down. The game's translation is comically bad at times, but the story is at least interesting in that it's a puzzle told from many perspectives. For me, the poor translation actually added to my enjoyment trying to figure out the mysteries behind the story. The only real criticisms or warnings I have is that I did encounter some technical problems with the game. I am playing on integrated graphics on a laptop with good ram and i7 cpu which runs most shmups fine initially, and generally has no problems with this kind of game. I have had a graphical glitch and it seems others have too where the game black screens at random points in story mode preventing completion. This is obviously a serious error and for now it appears I have fixed it after trying many things, but I'm still not sure if I have just gotten lucky so far. Usually I wouldn't leave a positive recommendation in such a case but I like this game so much that I'm willing to work around it to try to get the chance to play more. This is a small developer afterall, I am just thankful to have the chance to play smaller games like this that may have been passed over or less available in the past. I hope they will make more! Highly recommended for fans of the genre, just know that it's a little rough around the edges in terms of translation and possibly stability.
